The Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change is accepting applications from those interested in taking part in the activities of the 1st Latin American Seminar on Climate Justice, which will be held on 4, 5 and 6 November 2026 at the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). Featuring a programme comprising nine panel discussions and ten workshops, as well as artistic performances and book launches, the event aims to create interdisciplinary spaces for dialogue to generate and disseminate knowledge and practices in the field of climate justice through contributions from researchers, students, public officials and representatives of civil society from Latin America and the Caribbean.
Held in various venues across UERJ’s Maracanã campus, the full programme for SLAJC is now available on the OIMC website. Topics for discussion at the panels will include just transition and environmental racism, public policies on climate adaptation, oceans and mangroves, information integrity and climate obstruction, multilateralism and climate negotiations, and science and art in tackling the climate crisis, amongst others. The workshops, meanwhile, will address methods and practices related to the climate agenda, including a COP simulation and training sessions on the role of subjective perception and knowledge in understanding climate vulnerabilities, on data collection in peripheral territories and focus groups, on research methodologies concerning climate obstruction, and on knowledge for building climate justice. The Observatory’s more than 40 members will act as moderators for the panels and workshops. To contribute to this rich and diverse array of themes, knowledge and practices surrounding the climate justice agenda, the SLAJC will be joined by the Coordination of Arts and Creative Workshops at the UERJ Cultural Centre (COART/UERJ) in developing artistic activities throughout the three-day event.
Organised by the Observatory team, the seminar receives institutional support from various postgraduate programmes at UERJ, such as Political Science (PPGCP/IESP-UERJ), Environmental Studies (PPGMA/UERJ), Oceanography (PPGOcn/UERJ) and International Relations (PPGRI/UERJ).
