1st Latin American Seminar on Climate Justice – Last few days to register!

Next week, from 4 to 6 November 2026, the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change (OIMC) will hold the first Latin American Seminar on Climate Justice (SLAJC) at Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). Featuring a programme comprising nine panel discussions and ten workshops, as well as artistic performances and book launches, the event aims to create interdisciplinary spaces for dialogue to generate and disseminate knowledge and practices in the field of climate justice through contributions from researchers, students, public officials and representatives of civil society from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Taking place in various venues across UERJ’s Maracanã campus, the SLAJC programme features panel discussions on topics such as just transition and environmental racism, public policies on climate adaptation, mangroves, information integrity and climate obstruction, multilateralism and climate negotiations, and science and art in tackling the climate crisis, amongst others. The workshops, meanwhile, will address methods and practices related to the climate agenda, such as the role of subjective perception and knowledge in understanding climate vulnerabilities, data collection in peripheral areas and focus groups, research methodologies on climate obstruction, and knowledge for building climate justice. The Observatory’s more than 40 members will act as moderators for the panels and workshops. To round off this rich and diverse array of themes, knowledge and practices surrounding the climate justice agenda, the SLAJC will feature various artistic interventions throughout the three-day event. At the end, a closing reception will be held, featuring the launch of books, studies and policies aimed at promoting a transition capable of integrating different dimensions of justice (ecological, social, energy and development models).

Organised by the Observatory in partnership with the UERJ Cultural Centre, the LACLIMA Institute and the CIPÓ Platform, the Latin American Seminar on Climate Justice is supported by the Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ), the Brazilian Ministry of Racial Equality (MIR) and the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS), as well as institutional support from UERJ’s graduate programs in Environment (PPGMA/UERJ), Political Science (PPGCP/IESP-UERJ), Oceanography (PPGOcn-UERJ) and International Relations (PPGRI/UERJ), and from the National Observatory for Water Security and Adaptive Management (ONSEAdapta).
