Last week, from 1 to 4 September 2026, two representatives of the Strategic Comitee of the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change attended the 19th Pan-European Conference on International Relations (PEC 2026), organised at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) by the European International Studies Association (EISA). Aimed at reflecting on key issues of the ongoing debate in the field of study, the event brought together renowned experts affiliated with the association to take part in panel discussions and plenary sessions, amongst other activities related to the theme Even better than the real thing? Questioning knowledge production, positionality, and authenticity in IR.

Professor Ana Paula Tostes (Jean Monnet Chair at UERJ) chaired the panel discussion Europe and the Geopolitics of Green Transition, during which she also presented the paper Cooperation under a Conflicting Order: Europe–South America Relations, co-authored with Yasmin Renne (Nova FCSH). For his part, the director of the Observatory, Prof. Carlos R. S. Milani, took part in two panel discussions: Perspectives of the Global South and the Global North on World Order, during which he presented his research entitled ‘he Anthropocene, the Climate Emergency and International Relations; and the panel Ocean Regions as Spaces of Contention, presenting the paper Ocean Regions and the Climate Emergency: a Brazilian perspective on the South Atlantic, co-authored with Murilo Gomes da Costa, Emanuel Semedo, Frederico de Gomes Filho and Rafaela Collopy.
