OIMC at the Europe-Latin America and Caribbean International Conference

From 23 to 25 March 2026, the Institute of International Relations at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (IRI/PUC-Rio) hosted the International Conference on “Euro-Latin -American and Caribbean Cooperation in Climate and Biodiversity Governance and in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals”, bringing together European, Latin American and Caribbean academics and policymakers to discuss the constantly evolving dynamics driving sustainable development in the context of profound global transformations.

On the third day of the event, the team from the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change was invited to take part in the panel discussion Climate Obstruction and Multilateral Negotiations. Moderated by Prof. Ana Paula Tostes (Jean Monnet Chair/UERJ), the panel included Prof. Carlos R. S. Milani (OIMC director), Prof. Pablo Saturnino (PPGRI-UERJ) and our collaborating researcher Maria Isabel Santos Lima (IESP-UERJ). The debate drew on the concept of climate obstructionism to present findings from the research network Climate Obstruction and Foreign Policy in Comparative Perspective, an international partnership between the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA).
