Professor Mário L. G. Soares (FAOC-UERJ), a researcher on the strategic committee of the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change and coordinator of the Centre for Mangrove Studies (NEMA), has co-authored the book Manguezal Carioca: Rio’s Mangroves with photographer Gustavo Pedro (AFNatura). Published by Luminatti Editora, with support from Rio de Janeiro Municipal Government through the Culture Incentive Law and private sponsorship from M&I Electric, Sitti and MPE Engenharia, the publication was launched at an event at the headquarters of the Guaratiba Biological Reserve (Rebio) in late April 2026.
Resulting from extensive research conducted by the authors, the book features spectacular images that highlight the scenic beauty and wildlife of the mangroves, such as the uçá crab and the endangered guaiamum crab. Through a dialogue between the artistic vision of photography and the knowledge produced by scientific research, this work offers a new perspective on mangrove forests, highlighting the environmental, scientific and social importance of this ecosystem and helping to dismantle the stigmas historically associated with these areas.
