OIMC coordinator takes part in colloquium on ocean governance at the University of Pretoria

Between 11 and 13 November 2024, Prof. Carlos R. S. Milani participated as one of the guest speakers at the third edition of the Oceans and Ocean Regions Governance colloquium, promoted by the Oceans Regions Programme and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) at the University of Pretoria (South Africa).

The OIMC coordinator was part of the opening panel of the event’s programme, Ocean Regions – Contexts and Issues, debating, along with experts from institutions on various continents, the current state of governance of ocean regions, their main agents of influence and how the international legal framework can adapt to the challenges of a field in constant transition. On the closing day of the conference, Prof Milani took part in a session on developing a research programme on international ocean policy.

Organised annually by Prof Maxi Shoeman, the event brings together researchers, diplomats and military personnel from the Navy to discuss how to formulate public policies that consider the oceans in their different dimensions: the oceans as a blue economy that drives social and economic benefits, the oceans as spaces for the projection of power by states and transnational corporations and, finally, the oceans as a subsystem of planet Earth that therefore integrates the current debates on the Anthropocene and anthropogenic climate change.
