Latin American Seminar on Climate Justice
Climate justice concerns the intersection between climate action and social justice, recognising that the main contributors to the climate crisis are those who suffer least from its consequences, whilst the most vulnerable groups and their territories are those that contribute least to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, both historically and today. The concept brings to the fore the debate on the responsibility of the present generation towards future generations and non-human forms of life.
From 4 to 6 November 2026, the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change is organising a special seminar featuring nine thematic panels and nine workshop sessions, as well as the release of publications and artistic interventions related to the theme. The activities will discuss, amongst other topics, climate adaptation policies, health and the climate emergency, oceans and mangroves, just transition and environmental racism, information integrity and climate obstruction, international politics and climate negotiations, and science and art in tackling the climate emergency.
Organised by OIMC at the Maracanã campus of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), the Latin American Seminar on Climate Justice is supported by the Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ), the Climate and Society Institute (iCS) and the Ministry of Racial Equality (MIR).
Anthropocene, Climate Change and Social Sciences in Brazil Seminar
Against the backdrop of the climate emergency, the intensification of global warming and extreme weather events is a problem that is at once scientific, theoretical, political, economic, environmental and educational. Whilst political ecology enables us to understand new relationships between humans and nature, it is only with the Anthropocene that these relationships have reached insurmountable limits. It has become inevitable to redefine what development, prosperity, abundance, freedom and justice mean.
To help translate the climate crisis into research agendas for the social sciences, the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change, with the support of the Rio de Janeiro State Research Support Foundation (FAPERJ) and the Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP-UERJ) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), organised five thematic panels on 30 and 31 March 2023, showcasing the diversity of challenges and the strategies required to tackle this crisis. The panels comprised more than 20 internationally renowned researchers, including both Brazilian and foreign experts.
