Simulation of COP30 Negotiations at UERJ, organised by OIMC

On 10 and 11 November 2025, the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change (OIMC) at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), in partnership with the Graduate Programme in International Relations (PPGRI-UERJ), held a Simulation of the Negotiations of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) at the institution’s Maracanã campus. During the two-day event, approximately 41 students from different public and private universities in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro were able to experience acting as delegates of State Parties and as representatives of Transnational Public Advocacy Networks, such as the press and civil society.

Organised by the Observatory’s researchers Leticia Britto dos SantosEduarda Lattanzi (institutional postdoctoral fellow in Political Science at IESP-UERJ), Matheus Declie and Rafaela Collopy, the activity also had the support of the Climate Observatory (OC), which provided a special kit with informational materials about the Conference. This set of content and gifts was used as prizes for participants in the categories: outstanding delegation, best speech, most cooperative spirit, and most innovative proposal. As a result of the simulation, the delegates presented a final resolution proposal, and the press representatives created an Instagram profile to disseminate the main information about the activity.

The COP30 Negotiation Simulation at UERJ offered moments of great academic value and insight into international negotiations and the climate change agenda, with the aim of encouraging the development of new leaders in areas related to climate diplomacy and environmental policy. It was undoubtedly a memorable experience for everyone who was unable to attend in person in Belém. Diplomatic cheers!
