OIMC researchers at the UN Climate Conference – COP 29

Between 11 and 22 November 2024, researchers Beatriz Triani and Luan Werneck were in Baku (Azerbaijan) accompanying the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29), representing the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change on various agendas.

A collaborating researcher with OIMC and a master’s student in Political Science at IESP-UERJ, Beatriz is taking part in the Conference to follow the negotiations on climate adaptation as part of the delegation of the second class of Young Climate Negotiators. Promoted by the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Environment and Climate Secretariat (SMAC-RJ), the International Youth Observatory (OIJ) and PerifaLab, the programme aims to train young leaders from Rio de Janeiro to become effective climate negotiators and represent the local perspectives and urgencies of Brazilian youth on the Brazilian and UN climate agendas.

A Scientific Initiation researcher at the Observatory and a graduate student in International Relations at DRI-UERJ, Luan is working at the event as coordinator of the COP 2024 Operation – Young Climate Ambassadors programme, promoted by The Climate Reality Project Brazil to train young Brazilians in international climate negotiation issues. At the COP, he also monitors the Climate Finance agenda and participates in events with Brazilian civil society.

The OIMC team produces annual monitoring reports on the international climate negotiations during the UN Climate Conference. The reports for the last three editions of the COPs have been published as part of our Cadernos do OIMC series.
