OIMC, LEGAL and OPSA hold seminar on Governance and Development in the Pan-Amazon in Face of Climate Change, at IESP-UERJ

On 31 March 2025, the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change will team up with the Laboratory of Geopolitical Studies of the Legal Amazon (LEGAL) and the South American Political Observatory (OPSA) to hold the seminar Governance and Development of the Pan-Amazon in Face of Climate Change, at the Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP-UERJ). From 9am to 6pm, the event offers three panel discussions made up of researchers associated with the Pan-Amazonian Governance, Climate Change and Sustainable Development project to discuss the partial results of the inter-institutional initiative which, since July 2023, brings together representatives from the three research groups with experts from the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT), the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT), the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP) and the Federal University of Rondônia (UNIR). The activities will be held in person, in the Olavo Brasil Room, with a live online broadcast on the Institute’s YouTube channel.

The seminar is meant to be a space for sharing reflections on the political governance of the Pan-Amazon in a year in which the region will be at the centre of the world’s attention as it hosts, in Belém, the United Nations Conference on Climate Change 2025 (COP-30) next November. Funded by the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ), as part of the Amazônia+10 call for proposals, the Pan-Amazonian Governance, Climate Change and Sustainable Development project is investigating the perceptions, interests and actions of different political actors with the power to influence sustainable development in the Pan-Amazon region, in order to understand the relations of cooperation and conflict between them and assess the possibilities and limits of polycentric, multi-scalar or multi-level governance in the region.
