The Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change is launching a new initiative to combat disinformation and climate obstruction in everyday digital life. In short videos presented by young OIMC researchers, the Criando Um Clima (translater in portuguese literally as creating some climate or, figuratively, as building a mood) series seeks to broaden and strengthen understanding of the main climate debates by translating the information into accessible, accurate and direct language.
Starting on 15 May, each of the three episodes of the series will be published, always on Thursdays, on the Observatory’s social media. In addition to our fundamental purpose of scientific dissemination, the project is committed to spreading qualified content adapted for sharing on social networks, presenting information that fits into the rhythm of the main digital media of today. Each episode is built on monitoring the trending issues on the networks and articulated with the research carried out by our team, focusing on the human, social and political dimensions of the climate crisis, bringing to light issues such as attacks on environmental activists, the false contradiction between fighting climate change and socio-economic development, and the exploitation of the Amazon to falsely appeal to obstructionist narratives.
The Criando Um Clima (Creating a Climate) project is organised by the OIMC with the support of the Rio de Janeiro State Research Foundation (Faperj), the Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP-UERJ) of the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) and the Institute for Climate and Society (iCS). All the episodes in the series are already available to watch on our channel:
