The Commentaries from the OIMC series, a project of short, free-form, opinion pieces produced by the Interdisciplinary Observatory on Climate Change team, has published its latest edition. Entitled COP 29: The financing-only COP, the article signed by researcher Beatriz Triani presents a critical analysis of the results achieved at the last United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 29), held in Azerbaijan in 2024.

As a result, COP 29, initially dubbed the ‘Financing COP’, ended up leaving a trail of dissatisfaction in the international climate change negotiations. The concentration of discussions around the NCQG ended up monopolising the debate and blocking other crucial and urgent agendas, such as the NAPs and the GGA. The lack of consensus on the responsibility of countries and the interpretation of the CBDR, coupled with the resistance of developed countries to making robust financial commitments, demonstrated the ineffectiveness and need for reform of multilateral decision-making structures.
A PhD candidate in the Graduate Programme in Political Science at IESP-UERJ, Beatriz Triani is developing the research project The influence of obstructionist actors and practices in transactional advocacy networks in the context of climate change, under the supervision of Prof. Ana Paula Tostes. The researcher, who collaborates with the OIMC and the World Political Analysis Laboratory (LABMUNDO), attended COP 29 as part of the delegation from the second group of the Young Climate Negotiators project.
